Executive search can often be impersonal, cold, and stuffy.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned (and loved) about headhunting within building products and construction for over twenty years, it’s that both are people industries.
And so, I’d like to introduce you to the man behind MG Headhunting.
Meeting with a recruitment agency in 2000, the penny dropped that recruitment is about helping people, both in the form of individuals finding work and employers desperate to find the right person.
I secured a role within a technical, permanent agency, recruiting engineers into R&D teams, when 3G was just a concept. I instantly loved it, even when, due to a downturn in the market, the original 55 strong company reduced to just me, two other employees and the three directors. Perversely, this provided me with the grit required to succeed in recruitment.
Having moved from my birthplace of Milton Keynes (I know) to my now permanent home in Shropshire in 2004, I was then introduced to a headhunting firm which specialised in building products and haven’t considered moving out of the industry since.
My dad worked for Aston Martin and more latterly Bentley, as a manager within their engineering department. Therefore, I’ve always had a natural leaning towards factories, and how things are made.
Building products and construction offer that in abundance. Plus, the variety of products, applications and services, together with the broad variety of functions that I recruit, more than keeps my interest.
Being brought up by an engineer - although sometimes painful when it came to homework - also taught me to be systematic and thorough. It's probably why clients tend to stick with me longer than they planned to.
It’s leaving a client and candidate fully satisfied, having put faith in partnering me, that gives me the biggest sense of fulfilment.
Outside of work, along with my wife, I am a father to two very active sons. Both have taken up my long-term interest in cricket. Having coached the eldest’s junior team for the past six years, I’ve now moved onto my younger son’s team – it’s never ending!
Aside from this, I’m an avid fitness freak; often spending early mornings or lunchtimes at the gym or running up a hill. Should you meet me you’re best off not bring up my fascination with the Peloton app.
Along with cricket, I’m a keen darts player (although friends cannot convince me to join a league), with this interest coming years before the ‘Littler effect’ took the nation by storm. NFL is another of my favourite sports to watch.
With any spare time I have left, I love reading – espionage, horror, science fiction, and going to concerts (test me, I’m likely to either like or appreciate your tastes) and enjoy a good brain teaser be this in the form of a book or phone app.
That’s me. I’d love to hear about you, your business, your ambitions and challenges.
